XYZprinting offers free 3D printer to schools with purchase of STEAM curriculum

Desktop 3D printer manufacturer XYZprinting is hoping to broaden the use of additive manufacturing in education with a new bundle program. The initiative, targeted at teachers and schools, provides a free 3D printer with the purchase of the XYZPrinting K-12 STEAM curriculum.

By offering a free 3D printer for every $500 spent on its education curriculum programs, XYZprinting is hoping to appeal to schools and inspire the adoption of 3D printing in the classroom. For K-5 classes, XYZprinting will provide its da Vinci Jr 1.0 three-in-one 3D printer. The 3D printer, which is valued at $499.95, not only includes 3D printing capabilities but also 3D scanning and laser-engraving. The da Vinci Jr 1.0 printer is reportedly the company’s best selling model.

Grades 6-12 will be offered the larger da Vinci 1.1 Plus 3D printer—also valued at $499.95. The 3D printer has a larger build volume than the Jr (200 x 200 x 200 mm) and is equipped with a colour touch screen. The da Vinci 1.1 Plus is compatible with ABS and PLA filaments. Both educational bundles will be available to teachers and schools from now until October 2019.

“The XYZPrinting STEAM curriculum allows students to explore 3D printing and apply science concepts in an engaging, innovative, and futuristic way,” commented Gina Thackrey, STEM teacher and Innovative Educational Program Specialist from San Diego. “Bringing 3D printing into your classroom has never been easier or more affordable. My students have loved the opportunity to bring their ideas to life, create unique prototypes, and practice skills that prepare them for their future.”

XYZprinting STEAM education

At the core of the bundle offer is XYZprinting’s STEAM curriculum, which was developed by the company to promote the adoption of AM in classroom settings. The STEAM curriculum includes 40 different lesson plans for K-12 which are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

The lesson plans cover all areas of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) and are divided by educational level. For grades K-5, XYZprinting has curated 10 lesson plans, each priced t $250 per year. Grades 6-8 have access to 17 lesson plans (also each priced at $250 per subscription year). For the more advanced grades 9-12, there are 13 lesson plans, each priced at $500 per one-year subscription.

In addition to the lesson plans and the free 3D printer hardware, XYZprinting also offers a number of free software resources for teachers and students. For instance, the XYZmaker Suite  includes XYZmaker, an intuitive design software and XYZprint print software. Teachers will also be able to share their students’ 3D printed projects with other participating schools through the XYZprinting community.
