XYZprinting’s new da Vinci Color 5D combines 3D printing, 2D printing and laser engraving
It's a 3D printer...it's a 2D printer...it's a laser engraver!

Desktop 3D printer company XYZprinting has announced the latest 3D printer in its da Vinci series: the da Vinci Color 5D. The machine—which one can’t strictly call a 3D printer—combines full-color 3D printing with 2D inkjet paper printing and laser engraving in a single platform. XYZprinting will be showcasing its newest product at IFA 2019 from September 9 to 11 in Berlin.
Looking at the 3D printing component of the hybrid machine, XYZprinting says it has improved and upgraded its existing color FDM 3D printing technology to offer three times better color saturation than before. This is largely thanks to the combination of a new generation CMYK ink and a special color-absorbing PLA material (the printer is compatible with other filaments as well).
According to the company, the da Vinci Color 5D can print parts pigmented with the full color spectrum (instead of being limited to thousands of hues), while also providing optimized ink usage in its color cartridges.
“XYZprinting has a strong legacy in consumer paper printers, large format printers and 3D printers alike,” said Fernando Hernandez, EMEA MD of XYZprinting. “We’ve had more than 30 years in the printing industry as a market leader, which is largely thanks to our constant innovation and investment in creating new products. We’re thrilled to be adding to this now by bringing the da Vinci Color 5D to IFA 2019, and ultimately making 3D printing more accessible to more people.”
In addition to its color 3D printing capabilities, the da Vinci Color 5D also integrates a 2D inkjet paper printer and a laser engraver, all in one compact machine (560 x 560 x 635 mm). A side-hanging paper tray reportedly makes it easy for users to switch between 3D printing and 2D printing jobs.
Other notable features of the system include a 5” color touch panel for ease-of-use, an auto calibration feature, an auto-load filament system and a multi-temperature air fan that improves print quality and enhances color.
“The da Vinci Color 5D can be used by a wide range of people but will be particularly useful to small businesses and designers, thanks to its high-quality printing and ease of use,” added Hernandez. “The 2D printing and laser engraver features make the da Vinci Color 5D a world first, and the most complete and user-friendly desktop 3D printing unit developed. Entrepreneurs and creators will truly have the ability to bring their creations to life.”
Though the new 3D printer/2D printer/laser engraver is being unveiled this week, it is expected to become commercially available through XYZprinting’s reseller network in 2020.
