SLM Solutions partners with medical device company Canwell Medical

Canwell will implement SLM 3D printers to develop surgical implants

SLM Solutions has announced a strategic partnership with Canwell Medical, a leading medical device manufacturer in China. Through the alliance, Canwell Medical will use SLM machines to develop 3D printed surgical implant products. SLM Solutions will provide technical and application assistance, as well as research and development support to further accelerate Canwell Medical’s product certification and serial production.

Founded in 1994, Canwell Medical is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of orthopedic implants, instruments and orthopedic rehabilitation for medical instruments. The company, based in Zhejiang province, has become a prominent player in the Chinese orthopedic market as well as in the broader Asia Pacific region.

SLM Solutions’ metal AM systems have already been successfully adopted for the production of medical devices, including acetabular cups and intervertebral fusion cages. The additive specialist also continues to conduct many research and exploration initiatives based on these two types of product, analyzing the influence of process parameters. For example, SLM Solutions releases continuous updates on 60-micron process parameters for titanium alloy to print the acetabular cup. For knee joint applications, the company continuously develops 60-micron process parameters for a cobalt-chromium alloy. With a closed-loop powder handling system and sophisticated multi-laser technology, bi-directional recoating and optimized gas flow, SLM Solutions’ machines offer the safety and reliability required for orthopedic implant applications.

Many of SLM Solutions customers have successfully obtained FDA clearance or CE mark certification for 3D printed products and many clinical cases using its powder bed fusion technology have been accumulated. Canwell Medical will soon be exploiting the benefits offered by metal AM in its own orthopedic device production and explore new opportunities created by the technology.
