Siemens and Materials Solutions inaugurate new innovation center in Orlando, FL

The 17,000 sq. ft. facility will house state-of-the-art metal additive manufacturing equipment and more

Siemens and Materials Solutions (a Siemens business) have opened a new, 17,000 square foot innovation center in Orlando, Florida. The state-of-the-art facility will offer a combination of design and manufacturing solutions, utilizing advanced robotics, rapid prototyping, on-site metal additive manufacturing, scanning and digital tools to primarily serve Siemens’ energy businesses. Materials Solutions will also leverage the facility’s resources to offer additive manufacturing services to external customers.

The opening of the facility was celebrated this week in Orlando, bringing together leaders from across Siemens’ businesses, including Vinod Philip, CEO of Siemens Service Power Generation; Steve Conner, CEO of Siemens Energy, Inc.; Markus Seibold, VP of Additive Manufacturing at Siemens Power Generation Operations; and Mark Kamphaus, Head of Technology & Innovation for Siemens Service Power Generation. The inauguration was also attended by various Siemens employees and key customers as well as important players from other high-performance industries.

“This center is unique, bringing together a multitude of our innovative processes under one roof,” commented Tim Holt, COO of Siemens Gas and Power. “The combination of these competencies, with the 12 years of experience in metal additive that Materials Solutions brings, provides us with a distinctive capability to support the development of holistic additive solutions/services to our customers in our energy business, as well as in high-performance industries such as aerospace, automotive and others.”

Spanning 17,000 square feet (about 1,579 square meters), the new Siemens and Materials Solutions innovation center houses a collection of the latest manufacturing and inspection technologies (including metal 3D printers, robotic systems and 3D scanners). The equipment, operated by the company’s expert team, will allow Siemens to drive innovation in the development of new advanced components and digital solutions.

Materials Solutions, a UK-based company specializing in Selective Laser Melting technology, was acquired by Siemens in 2016, forming what is now Siemens and Materials Solutions. The new facility will act as a base for Siemens and Materials Solutions to serve the U.S. market and specifically its energy and aerospace industries. This will significantly expand the Siemens business’ reach, furthering its global expansion strategy.

Tess Boissonneault moved from her home of Montreal, Canada to the Netherlands in 2014 to pursue a master’s degree in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
