Rosswag acquires third SLM 280 3D printer to accelerate material qualification

Rosswag Engineering, a division of die forged product provider Rosswag GmbH, has today announced the acquisition of its third selective laser melting (SLM) 3D printer from SLM Solutions. The machine, an SLM 280, was recently delivered and installed at Rosswag Engineering’s facility in Pfinztal, Germany and will enable the company to expand its production and development capabilities and to further material qualifications for the SLM process.

Rosswag Engineering is leveraging SLM Solutions’ additive manufacturing technology in combination with Rosswag GmbH’s extensive, century-old experience in the production of metal alloys. At its facility, which houses a complete process chain—from metal powder production, design, simulation and printing to CNC post-processing and heat treatment (as well as metallurgical testing and quality control)—the company is placing an increasing emphasis on additive technologies.

As a strategic partner of SLM Solutions, Rosswag Engineering aims to support the advancement of the SLM process by qualifying new alloy powders and parameters for the technology. By combining various elements, such as a simulation software package, powder atomizer and now three SLM 280 3D printers, Rosswag has the capability to quickly produce special metal powders, simulate build results and produce test prints using its SLM hardware and SLM Solutions’ Material Development Module. Further, the company can complete post-processing and inspection in-house, reducing time-to-market cycles for new metal alloys significantly—from months to mere weeks.

“At Rosswag Engineering, our goal isn’t only to provide our customers with quality products built on metal additive manufacturing machines, rather to help the technology gain acceptance and expand,” said Gregor Graf, Head of Engineering at Rosswag. “By adding a third selective laser melting system we are able to increase our production capacities and gain more flexibility for demanding material and part qualification processes.”

SLM Solutions’ Material Development Module enables Rosswag Engineering to duplicate part positioning and use rule-based parameter variation to automatically and systematically analyze parameters sets. After the qualification process, comprehensive data for production, including metal powder characteristics, process parameters, mechanical values and chemical and metallurgical material properties, are easily available.

Rosswag recently became the first company certified by TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH as a metal powder manufacturer for additive manufacturing through its audit based on the AD 2000 Code for pressure equipment and the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
