RIZE One 3D printer granted world’s first UL 2904 GREENGUARD certification

RIZE, Inc. has landed a significant first in the additive manufacturing industry: its RIZE One industrial 3D printer is the first in the world to receive UL 2904 GREENGUARD certification. The certification, which also extends to the company’s Rizium One filament and Release and Marking inks, marks a significant step ahead for RIZE and 3D printing in general, especially when it comes to safety and sustainability.

The UL 2904 GREENGUARD certification is based on the newly established UL 2904 Method for Testing and Assessing Particle and Chemical Emissions from 3D Printers. The method was the result of a two-year-long study published by UL, a leading global safety science company, and the Georgia Institute of Technology which found that many desktop 3D printers release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ultrafine particles into the air, which can affect air quality and pose health hazards.

According to the study, more than 90% of the particles emitted by the desktop 3D printers were in the nanoparticle range and carried the risk of causing cardiovascular and pulmonary problems. The study also detected over 200 VOCs, many of which were known irritants and carcinogens, including formaldehyde, styrene and others. With the adoption of desktop 3D printers growing in the fields of education, healthcare and beyond, these findings were particularly concerning.

In response to the study, UL established and published emissions standard UL 2904 for 3D printers in 2018, which outlines particle and VOC emissions limits to maintain safe 3D printer operation. In other words, products that receive the UL 2904 GREENGUARD Certification are proven to meet rigorous third-party chemical emissions standards and are guaranteed to minimize the risk of air pollution and chemical exposure to those working with or near 3D printers.

RIZE’s RIZE One 3D printer—based on the company’s hybrid Augmented Deposition technology—is the first in the AM industry to achieve the safety certification. The company is—as one would expect—over the moon about the certification.

“We are delighted and honored to be the first company with products that achieved the UL 2904 GREENGUARD Certification,” said Andy Kalambi, President and CEO of RIZE, Inc. “Safety and sustainability is at the core of our mission to expand the usage of industrial 3D printing to all users and in all workplaces. We were able to meet the requirements set forth by UL 2904 because we purpose-built the RIZE system for safety and environmental-friendliness, with our engineering-grade thermoplastic compounds that are best-in-class for strength, yet safe to use virtually anywhere without special venting, disposal equipment or gloves.

“As the first 3D printer provider to earn GREENGUARD Certification to UL 2904, RIZE demonstrates their leadership in proactively bringing 3D printers to market that help support healthier indoor environments,” added Alberto Uggetti, Vice President and General Manager for UL’s Environment division. “We congratulate them on this notable accomplishment”
