Pzartech, a startup specializing in on-demand distributed manufacturing through 3D technologies, is joining Hangar Labs by BEDEK. The innovation commercial aviation program of Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. is thus welcoming the first startup to collaborate on visual recognition of mechanical parts. The aim is to eventually ease the work of maintenance technicians thus reducing downtime.
Hangar Labs by BEDEK (HLB) was set up in late 2017 to enable open innovation in Israel Aerospace Industries’s commercial aviation group BEDEK.
“We are very excited to welcome Pzartech to our program and are sure it would enjoy the many benefits it offers.” Zviya Baron, Head of HLB.
After pivoting to computer vision and machine learning, Pzartech Ltd. is starting is moving to the next stage of development.
“We are very enthusiastic to set up this pilot with Israel Aerospace Industries that will enable us to confirm in field conditions the value of our technology” says Jeremie Brabet-Adonajlo, Pzartech’s founder.
The collaboration will be taking place in Lod (Israel) where Israel Aerospace Industries’s commercial aviation maintenance operations are performed.
“Pzartech will be joined later this year by other startups selected to set up proof-of-concept projects to develop new products for the MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) business.”Assaf Tamir, CTIO at BEDEK.
Industrial equipment maintenance services in general and aerospace maintenance services particularly are engaged in a race to reduce downtime. According to the IATA, downtime for on commercial planes cost an average of $10,000 an hour.
While some efforts are focused on predictive maintenance, a lot of technologies are also developed to improve the operation of reviews and corrective maintenance such as AR/VR and computer vision powered inspection for instance. According to discussion with various professionals held by Pzartech, improving spare part identification could lead to a reduction of the downtime of up to 7% in the aerospace maintenance.
Israel Aerospace Industries is the leading Israeli company in the field of aerospace with a turnover of $840 million in Q3 2017.
Its civil maintenance activities group (Bedek) have been lately been expanding with, for instance, a maintenance contract signed with the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air.
Pzartech Ltd. is a startup based in Israel founded in 2015 focused on optimizing the maintenance process through the implementation of digital tools. Its latest focus is the development a technology that reduces downtime through the visual recognition of mechanical spare parts. Pzartech Ltd. is an alumnus of MassChallenge Boston 2016.
