Prayasta, a Bengaluru-based, ‘intellectual property-driven startup’, founded by Shilpi Sen, is revolutionizing the Indian breast implant industry – with 3D printing. More specifically, with Implant-grade Elastomer Additive Manufacturing (iEAM). The ‘deeptech-in-manufacturing’ company is creating breast implants and prostheses that are, according to the company, rupture resistant and fully personalized in shape, size, weight, touch, and feel.

“We understand that every woman is unique and so are their bodies, so should be their implants and prostheses. We strongly feel that products should fit you, rather than you fitting them. That is why our products are personalized for each one of you,” reads Prayasta’s website. “Our ‘Made-to-Fit’ approach addresses all the requirements that are unique in so many ways. Our current focus areas are breast implants for reconstruction surgeries and wearable breast prostheses for external use. Our focus is derived from our strength with additive manufacturing technology, skills in bio-compatible materials, and passion in the healthcare domain.”

Prayasta 3D prints these breast implants using a Silimac P250 – a 3D printer developed for ‘implant-grade’ elastomers, and especially well-suited to the printing of silicone (although it is compatible with all elastomeric, two-component, or similar materials). This industrial printer is designed to operate, uninterruptedly, for long production hours, and can hold up to 14,000 mL of silicone in a single refill. The printer’s in-built UV sterilization ensures the system is contamination-free.

According to Prayasta, “It’s [the Silimac P250] meticulous design maintains the sterility of the printing environment and the material producing best quality products suitable for medical applications and long-term implantations.”

The Silimac P250 is based on Implant-grade Elastomer Additive Manufacturing (iEAM) technology. The printer’s specifications include a 250 x 250 x 250mm build platform, a 50-micron printing resolution, a 150°C bed temperature, and a 10.1″ touchscreen display. Compatible materials include NuSil MED-4830 and NuSil MED-4820 implant-grade Liquid Silicone Rubbers (LSR), and Silopren LSR 2650. Implant-grade silicones are the purest form of silicone, and are platinum-based formulations manufactured in a controlled environment, and validated through stringent quality control.
