Dutch designer Pjotr (Rein van der Mast) is known for creating some amazing fountain pens (such as the Spica Virginis collection) using advanced metal and polymer powder bed fusion 3D printing processes. He is also, however, always looking for ways to improve the quality of his products and experimenting with various processes.

This does not only mean using expensive technologies: in fact his latest experimental creation was 3D Printed on an Ultimaker Extended 2+, using 40% bronze filled PLA filament, and polished. Pjotr works with all types of state-of-the-art 3D software, 3D printers, new materials (alloys) and post-processing equipment. Some results of his ongoing research have been successfully ‘materialised’. These include pens that are 3D printed in plastics, stainless steel, titanium, even gold and ceramics.

Pjotr began to explore digital sculpting and 3D printing metal objects in 2010. “I dreamed of creating precious objects with the latest technologies. The fountain pen would be my subject for merging art and technology,” he said. In 2013, after years of research, he introduced the first 3D printed fountain pen in the world. A titanium pen, with many sculptural details and integrated mechanics.

After three years as Manager Design & Engineering at Additive Industries, producing machines for 3D printing metal objects in primarily aerospace and automotive, he left to refocus on consumer products, design and customization. Over the years he has proven the feasibility of digital sculpting and 3D printing by creating some truly exclusive fountain pens with the most advanced techniques and materials.
