3D printing adhesive specialist Thought3D has announced the upcoming launch of a new Magigoo adhesive solution developed specifically for Owens Corning’s XSTRAND GF30-PP composite filament. The new product, called Magigoo PP-GF, was developed in close collaboration with Owens Corning.
Originally known for its Magigoo mix for first layer adhesion, Malta-based Thought3D has recently expanded beyond the hobbyist market into more industrial desktop 3D printing uses. Recently, for instance, the company announced a range of new industrial adhesive mixes, including Magigoo PP, for use with polypropylene filament; Magigoo PC, formulated for polycarbonate, the aforementioned Magigoo PP-GF and Magigoo PA (currently under development.
Now, the company has revealed more details about Magigoo PP-GF, explaining that it was specifically developed for Owens Corning’s glass fiber-reinforced filament. The filament in question, XSTRAND GF30-PP is an engineering grade filament that consists of polypropylene and 30% glass fibers. The material was developed for producing tooling and end use parts for a range of industries, including transportation, electronics, appliances and more.

Like Thought3D’s other adhesives, Magigoo PP-GF is meant to be applied to the heated print bed before the first layer is printed. The mixture is designed to adhere when the bed is heated and to release once it cools down, making part removal easy.
Andrei-Andy Linnas, Co-Founder of Thought3D, stated: “It was a particularly interesting challenge to come up with a specialty adhesive for this material as it is well known that it is difficult to adhere polyolefin materials to other types of materials. Introducing glass fibres in the material required a completely new adhesion technology and formulation. Our hard-working team did it in a record four months and we are happy with the results. We will work closely with Owens Corning to bring Magigoo PP-GF closer to the end users in coming months. We are sure it will improve the printing performance of this really functional and strong material.”
Dr. Keith M. Azzopardi and Jean Paul Formosa, chemists behind formulation of new adhesive added: “Even though glass fibre reinforced PP can be expected to lesser extent of warping and glass fibres aid with the adhesion to glass bed it is still likely that medium and large print objects can warp to higher extent, because materials’ higher stiffness may be overcoming the expected advantages of glass reinforced PP. We designed this adhesive from scratch in just four months constantly iterating and finally resulting in one that is tuned to provide strongest adhesion without breaking hardware, easy release and easy cleaning experience.”
