Germany-based LSS Laser-Sinter-Service GmbH has introduced its new RAPTOR series 3D printer at Formnext 2018. The new machine series aims to drive industrial adoption for laser-based powder bed fusion technology for polymers.
The RAPTOR 3D printer range consists of a few different models, including the RAPTOR 84X-Q, which offers a modular architecture and a large build volume of 800 x 400 x 480 mm. Notably, the RAPTOR 84X-Q is the first polymer laser sintering machine to be equipped with a quad laser/scanner system, which drastically increases print speeds. LSS also offers a dual laser/scanner system, the RAPTOR 84X-D.
For more entry-level users, LSS has also introduced the RAPTOR 22X-S, which has a more compact build space (250 x 250 x 300 mm) but integrates the same high-temperature capabilities as the 84X enabling the printing of high performance polymers.
Both laser sintering machines are also available in “TM” versions which integrate Airbus’ patented ThermoMelt process for high-performance industrial parts.
“The combination of modularity, highest productivity and the new ThermoMelt process enables LSS to take the next big step in becoming a leading solution provider for Industrial Additive Manufacturing and highly demanding applications,” said Guido Elbrecht, CEO of LSS. “The intrinsic features of our machines make high-performing, serial, and durable 3D printing a reality for our customers.”
The machines equipped with the ThermoMelt technology demonstrate high Z-axis strength and can produce high-density parts at low costs. The lower cost structure is largely thanks to the TM technology, which enables the processing of high-performance materials such as PEKK, PPA and PPS without the need for high process temperatures, which can cause thermal aging of the polymer material and reduce the powder’s potential for re-use.
“While designing the RAPTOR 84X-Q, we had typical LSS values in mind–be open, flexible, innovative and reliable,” explained Hermann Hanning, CTO at LSS. “Thanks to its strict modular design, we can upgrade or modify the machine to match all process or application relevant requirements. This makes the RAPTOR series fit for the future and allows optimal integration and adaption according to the individual needs of each and every customer.”
In addition to its RAPTOR laser-sintering technology, LSS also offers 3D printing services in SLS and SLA—something it has done for over 15 years. The company also supplies polymer laser sintering (PLS) and metal laser sintering (MLS) facilities for its clients across a range of industries, including automotive, automation, aerospace, oil and gas, healthcare, consumer goods and electronics.
