Lithoz forms alliance for 3D printed ceramic dental implants

Company to host webinar with Dr. Jens Tartsch, Founder of ESCI

Austria-based ceramic AM company Lithoz has announced a new partnership with Dr. Jens Tartsch, an expert in ceramic implantology in Switzerland and the founder and president of the European Society for Ceramic Implantology (ESCI). Together, the partners will seek to identify new applications to develop the future of 3D printed ceramic implants in the dental sector.

Ceramic materials are already widely used in the dental industry, as they are biocompatible and have less of a risk of causing inflammation compared to metal implants. Ceramics also have the benefit of having long-term stability and high mechanical performance, which is ideal for implants that have to perform the function of teeth. 3D printed dental implants are also advantageous: they offer a greater degree of design freedom compared to conventionally produced devices and are more efficient in terms of material usage. For these reasons, as well as the customization potential, 3D printing is a popular technology across the dental sector. The aim of the partnership is to advance the use of 3D printed ceramics.

Lithoz Ceramic dental implants

Lithoz, a company that has developed a scalable ceramic AM process, Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM), has had ties with dentistry for some time, and offers many medically optimized materials. According to the company, its ceramics will soon hold EN ISO 13485 certifications.

Working in collaboration with Dr. Jens Tartsch, Lithoz will explore dental implant applications for its LCM process, including conventional dental implants and bone augmentation. For the latter, Lithoz offers resorbable materials like hydroxyl apatite or tricalcium phosphate which can be used to produce interconnected pore network-based implants that are customized to the patient’s bone status. These highly tailored devices could support dental implant growth in cases where the patient is lacking jaw bone.

To delve deeper into their collaboration, Dr. Tartsch and Lithoz’s Dr. Bomze are co-hosting a webinar on August 26, 2020. They will discuss the opportunities of ceramic AM in the dental market as well as answer any questions participants may have. Also on the agenda: Lithoz is participating in a Ceramics 3D Printing webinar on July 15, 2020 hosted by our own Davide Sher.
