As reported by MoldMaking Technology, OR Laser has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Heraeus for developing powdered metal materials for additive manufacturing applications using the Orlas Creator Platform.
Headquartered in Hanau, Germany, Heraeus is an international, family-owned technology company with specific expertise in materials development. The company has built a solid reputation for developing powdered materials for additive manufacturing systems focusing on a cohesive approach that combines powder, process and printer. The new Orlas Creator metal 3D printing platform from OR Laser, launched at Formnext 2016 last November, offers a new paradigm for the high quality, economic 3D printing of metal products and parts with a powder bed process that utilizes a high quality laser and a proprietary recoater blade that promises speeds up to 30% faster than comparable systems.
OR Laser is releasing the Orlas Creator with an open source materials approach, meaning customers are not locked into any specific materials supplier. However, the company is also very aware of the issues that arise from processing metal AM powders and is keen to offer its customers options for optimal performance with the Orlas Creator.
The collaboration agreement with Heraeus involves Heraeus obtaining an Orlas Creator system, which the company will operate to fully test it with a wide range of its powdered materials. The aim is to qualify Heraeus powdered materials for the Orlas Creator and subsequently develop specific 3D printing parameters and guidelines for its powders.
