KW Special Projects granted £3.4M to open Digital Manufacturing Centre in Silverstone, UK

KW Special Projects, a UK-based engineering consultancy firm, this week secured £3.4 million in funding to open a new Digital Manufacturing Centre at Silverstone Park, near the Silverstone motor racing circuit. The new facility, which spans 1,657 square meters, is expected to bring economic growth to the area, up to the tune of £9 million.

The funding for the new digital manufacturing hub was secured by KW Special Projects from the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP). The facility will house a range of advanced manufacturing technologies, including various additive manufacturing systems, which will enable local SMEs to access state-of-the-art technologies as well as leverage expert knowledge.

The Digital Manufacturing Centre will also house an incubation and manufacturing space that will cater to tech startups working with high-performance technologies. Ultimately, the facility is aimed at the development of new, high-value engineering opportunities for the region as well as to support over a hundred SMEs in the adoption and exploration of advanced manufacturing processes.

Though it now works in various sectors, KW Special Projects has its roots in the motorsport industry. As the company describes itself: “We use the speed and agility of the motorsport industry upon which we were founded to provide cutting-edge, on-demand design and engineering services to support organisations with.”

Alfa Romeo Tipo sports car restored by KW Heritage

Some of our readers might remember an especially interesting project heralded by KW Special Projects’ Heritage division last year, which consisted of restoring an ultra-rare Alfa Romeo Tipo sports car with 3D scanning and 3D printing.

“Having grown from a motorsport background, it’s exciting to be able to help drive the latest technology projects across multiple industries, right here at Silverstone,” said Kieron Salter, Managing Director at KWSP. “Our goal is to create a hub of engineering innovation that sees the best and most creative minds working side by side to develop the technologies of tomorrow. This is a vision facilitated by SEMLEP, who has been instrumental in securing our funding through its Local Growth Fund, supporting businesses like KWSP in transforming visions into reality.”

Broadly, the goal of the new Digital Manufacturing Centre is to support and encourage the advancement and growth of the Silverstone Technology area through the promotion and adoption of cutting-edge manufacturing practices.

“Working with innovative businesses like KWSP to make their ideas become reality is exactly what the makes the SEMLEP area the successful place it is today,” commented Hilary Chipping, chief executive of SEMLEP. “Businesses in this area remain at the cutting edge of digital technology.”
