INMETRO, a Brazilian standards organization, has signed a partnership agreement with local AM company FARCCO Tecnologia Industrial with the express goal of accelerating the implementation and adoption of additive manufacturing in Brazil’s industrial sectors. The partners believe that AM will help companies in Brazil achieve a higher technological capacity.
Operating within the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, INMETRO (the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality) is a standards group whose role is to accredit certification bodies, such as TÜV SÜD.
FARCCO, for its part, is an active player in Brazil’s growing AM market, operating as a sales and applications provider for local and internationals clients. The company, which has extensive experience with many AM processes and materials, works with clients to develop new manufacturing processes and supports national technological centers. The company has also come to play a role in the standardization of AM, working with groups like ASTM, ISO and ABNT.
“It is a fundamentally disruptive technology with capabilities to produce parts and systems with quality and performance impossible via other traditional manufacturing processes,” said Oleksii Kuznetsov, the head of INMETRO’s Division of Materials Metrology (Dimat). “It is a technology that has been used in all industrial sectors, [taking] industries that introduce additive manufacturing into their processes [to] a whole new level of competitiveness.
“INMETRO is already working in this technological area in biomedical applications (orthopedic, prostheses, replacement and repair of injured tissues and human organ fields, among others). It is essential that INMETRO continues to expand its work in this field to meet the metrological needs of this technology in Brazilian companies.”
Fabio Sant’Ana, the director of FARCCO, added: “Brazilian companies are very interested in additive manufacturing as an Industry 4.0 pillar, the objective of the partnership with INMETRO is to accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing here through the research and quality resources already existing in INMETRO and the development of new processes to increase the use of additive manufacturing in the country.”
