How Imaginarium used 3D printing to help create a Guinness world record diamond ring

Imaginarium, a large 3D printing service provider in India, supported Kotti Srikanth in his quest to achieve a Guinness World Record for the most diamonds set in one ring. Kotti Srikanth, owner of the Diamond Store by Chandubhai, a unit of Hallmark Jewellers, in Hyderabad, set ou to break the record with a ring named The Divine – 7801 Brahma Vajra Kamalam.

The process to design The Divine – 7801 Brahma Vajra Kamalam began in September 2018, and the design team ran through multiple iterations before deciding on the form of a flower (flowers are traditionally used as an offering to the gods, and are considered auspicious). The design team chose the Himalayan Camellia flower which provided the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary forms.

Manufacturing a Guinness world record diamond ring

Once the design was formalized, the Diamond Store design team used computer-aided design (CAD) to figure out how many diamonds they would need to create the ring that they had in mind. They got in touch with Imaginarium’s Jewellery design and manufacturing team to cast the ring. The ring was split into seven different sections, the ring and six petals, that would be held together with a stigma screw. The ring was initially 3D printed in direct castable resin using Rapidshape system – and subsequently cast in gold.

Once the ring was finished, Srikanth sent it to Imaginarium to ascertain and certify the number of diamonds set in the ring and to verify the cut, clarity and weight of each diamond. Specialists dismantled the ring and counted the diamonds on both sides of each petal using specialized equipment.

Verifying the record

The ring was sent to Guinness World Records for verification and the record for the “Most Diamonds Set in One Ring” was awarded on August 9th, 2020. Verification of the record took some time as Guinness World Records require each diamond to be conflict-free and natural, and all proofs for the diamonds and ring were submitted as asked.

“Imaginarium was able to manufacture the petals and the ring in the shape we imagined using high-quality materials,” said Kotti Srikanth. “We received the cast pieces very quickly and Imaginarium even helped us ascertain the number of diamonds once we had set them in the ring. It was a pleasure working with Imaginarium and we look forward to working with them again!”

Update: A new record for most diamonds in a ring was set in November 2020, by Meerut based Renani Jewels with 12,638 diamonds. But this record still shines a bright light on 3D printing.
