Formlabs launches six new 3D printing resins

New materials for medical, dental and engineering applications

SLA 3D printing company Formlabs has announced the launch of six new resins for its Form 3, Form 3B and Form 2 3D printers. The resins expand the scope of applications for the company’s AM technology in several industries, including healthcare, dental and engineering.

BioMed Resins

In the medical sector, Formlabs has brought to market a new line of BioMed Resins, which consists of BioMed Clear and BioMed Amber. BioMed Clear is a strong, hard and biocompatible resin that is well suited for applications that require wear resistance and low water absorption. The resin is USP Class VI certified and is manufactured at Formlabs’ ISO 13485 facility. It is also supported with an FDA Device Master File and is compatible with most common sterilization methods. BioMed Clear is ideal for printing surgical planning and implant tools, drug delivery devices, bioprocessing equipment, jigs and fixtures and more.

Formlabs new materials

BioMed Amber, for its part, is a rigid material with biocompatible properties. It is well suited for applications that require short-term skin or mucosal membrane contact, like nasal swabs. The material is also manufactured at Formlabs’ ISO 13485 facility and can be sterilized using solvent disinfection or other common methods. The resin is ideal for printing implant guides and drilling templates, surgical planning and implant sizing tools, medical devices and R&D.

Flexible and Elastic Resins

Formlabs’ new family of engineering-grade Flexible and Elastic Resins consists of Flexible 80A (a reformulation of the existing Flexible Resin) and Elastic 50A Resin. Both materials extend the company’s offering of high-performance soft materials, which are ideal for producing flexible parts, consumer goods prototypes, robotics features, props and more.

Flexible 80A Resin

Flexible 80A Resin is the stiffest soft-touch material in Formlabs’ porfolio of Flexible and Elastic Resins. The material has an 80A Shore durometer, similar to the flexibility of rubber or TPU. It is a resilient material capable of withstanding bending, flexing and compression. It can be used to print handles, grips, overmolds, seals, gaskets and cushioning, as well as cartilage, tendon and ligament anatomy.

Elastic 50A Resin is a rebrand of Formlabs’ Elastic Resin, with a 50A Shore durometer. It is the company’s softest engineering resin available and is ideal for prototyping parts typically made from silicone. The material has applications in wearables, compressible buttons, stretchable enclosures and casings and soft tissue anatomy.

Dental Resins

Custom Tray Resin

Finally, Formlabs has introduced new dental materials through its Materials Partnership Platform with BEGO: Dental LT Clear Resin (V2), Custom Tray Resin and Temporary CB Resin. The former is an improved formulation of Dental LT Clear Resin, which is suitable for splints and occlusal guards. The color-corrected resin prints clear and can be polished to achieve a high optical standard. It also resists discoloration and is fracture resistant.

Custom Tray Resin is a new material specifically developed for directly printing custom impression trays. The resin is fast-printing (a tray can be printed in under an hour), allowing for higher throughput. Temporary CB Resin is available in four VITA shades and was developed in collaboration with BEGO. The material is designed for printing temporary crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and veneers.
