Texas-based 3D printing company Essentium, Inc. is teaming up with Vorum, a provider of CAD/CAM software for custom orthotics and prosthetics (O&P), to offer a 3D printing solution for the global O&P market. The offering, the Essentium + Vorum solution, will be available to customers across the prosthetics market, enabling practitioners to manufacture and deliver customized orthotic and prosthetic devices to their customers, at speed and scale.
The Essentium + Vorum solution for the O&P segment aims to fill certain gaps in the market. For one, the companies say their solution overcomes prior limitations related to a lack of materials and reliable 3D printing platform. By leveraging Essentium’s High-Speed Extrusion (HSE) 3D printing technology and materials, as well as Vorum’s CAD/CAM solutions and SurePath methodology, the joint solution facilitates the production of mass customized O&P devices.
From a workflow perspective, Vorum’s SurePath methodology will simplify the process substantially. Informed by Vorum’s 30 years of experience in the industry, SurePath provides O&P practitioners with the tools for implementing 3D printing, as well as for training and support.
“Our partnership with Essentium means we can offer O&P customers the confidence that they will have the device they desire every time they print,” said Carl Saunders, CEO and Founder of Vorum. “We know that practitioners don’t want to waste their time with experimental technology—they want to know that their investment in a 3D print solution will deliver the best devices for their patients. With our SurePath solution, we know that what Vorum can provide in collaboration with Essentium is a trusted end-to-end solution for the digital design and manufacture of orthotics and prosthetics that have the ability to improve people’s lives.”
The Essentium + Vorum solution is designed to make the transition from more traditional plaster-casting methods to digital 3D processes as seamless as possible for O&P clinicians. The software and hardware combo seek to revolutionize O&P production, enabling a more efficient workflow so that practitioners can have more time to focus on patient care.
Blake Teipel, CEO and Co-Founder of Essentium, said of the collaboration: “Our ground-breaking 3D printing platform combined with Vorum’s expertise will not only help O&P customers embrace a faster, more efficient method for producing custom-made orthotics and prosthetics, but the medical devices will also be produced with high quality and durability. Together we are re-writing the business and production model for O&P professionals that bring profoundly important mobility and independence to their patients.”
