In addition to debuting its latest system, the HSE 240 HT Dual Extruder 3D printer, at Formnext 2021, Essentium Inc. is expanding its portfolio of industrial-grade 3D printing filaments with the launch of PPS-CF, a 15% carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide filament made with LUVOCOM 3F resin from LEHVOSS Group. The material is a cost-effective alternative to high-temperature materials like PEEK and PEKK.
Essentium’s newest filament is based on PPS, a semicrystalline polymer that is widely used for challenging industrial applications. The material is characterized by excellent strength and stiffness as well as temperature, chemical and wear resistance. The material also boasts a good price-to-performance ratio, which makes it a more accessible option than high-performance polymers in the PAEK family.
PPS-CF filament is suitable for the production of tooling for injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming and expanded polystyrene foam molding. Essentium specifies that manufacturers can effectively replace CNC aluminum soft wools with PPS-CF 3D printed counterparts. In other words, the material functions as a light-duty, low-cost metal replacement for tooling applications.
In addition to the new material launched in the context of Formnext, Essentium is also unveiling a new format for its filaments, a five kg spool. The larger filament spool size will enable users to continuously 3D print large parts without the need to swap spools mid-print. Finally, Essentium is also introducing a new mobile app—the Essentium Mobile App—which will enable its customers to remotely monitor 3D print jobs. The app connects to a camera built in to the Essentium HSE 240 HT Dual Extruder 3D printer and provides real-time video monitoring. The new app, spool and filament will be on display this week at Formnext, in Hall 12.1, Booth D41.
