Emaar Properties, a Dubai-based real estate developer, is reportedly planning to construct a 3D printed home in the UAE city. The project will mark Emaar’s first foray into 3D printed housing and its first step towards becoming a “leading adopter of advanced construction technologies.”

Dubai, which is already home to the world’s first 3D printed office building, has made its intentions to become a hub for construction 3D printing explicit. In fact, the Middle Eastern city has laid out a strategy through which it plans to 3D print 25% of all new buildings by the year 2030.

Emaar is the latest player to jump onto the scene, after it was awarded a contract through a global competition to 3D print a model home in Arabian Ranches III. The home, whose 3D printed construction will reportedly be executed through a partnership with a local contractor, will demonstrate how AM can be leveraged for sustainable construction practices through a reduction in material waste and noise pollution.

Emaar Properties 3D printed house

Once the Arabian Ranches III home is completed, it will be used as a model to show investors the potential of 3D printing and advanced technologies more broadly within the real estate industry.

Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, commented on the endeavor, saying: “As the pioneer of integrated communities in Dubai and the trend-setter in the region’s property sector, our plans to embrace 3D printing of homes is an integral part of our digital-first and customer-first strategy. Through this, we are not only positioning ourselves as an early adopter of advanced technology but also creating long-term value for our customers as 3D printing brings numerous advantages such as reduced cost of construction, more efficient use of materials and higher levels of sustainability.

“With 3D printing technology, to be implemented locally using international expertise, we are also supporting the vision of the leadership to build ‘Smart and Sustainable Cities’ that are tech-driven and meet the aspirations of the new generation of customers. It will also help accelerate the innovation ecosystem in Dubai, inspiring start-ups to contribute towards advanced construction technology.”

The 3D printed model house in Dubai is part of Emaar’s broader plan to establish a real estate landscape in which customers can simply design, download and 3D print their homes. Of course, this reality is still far off, as there is much to be validated and proven within the bourgeoning field of construction AM, but early steps are being taken to get there.

Arabian Ranches III was launched by Emaar last year and consists of residential communities that feature parks, boulevards, rivers and various sporting facilities. Soon, the luxury real estate center will feature one of Dubai’s first 3D printed buildings.
