German startup DyeMansion announced this week that the entire RAL colour range is now available for laser sintered parts using its DM60 colouring post-processing system and its on-demand service. The new colour possibilities will soon also be available for white HP Multi Jet Fusion parts from its 500/300 series.
Founded in 2015 and backed by AM Ventures, DyeMansion has been a pioneer in colour processing for 3D printed parts, specifically laser sintered parts. By now offering the entire RAL palette to its clients and users, the company is aiming to offer the freedom afforded by 3D printing beyond structural design and into colour finishes. Notably, the company also recently secured an investment of $5 million which will enable it to expand its business.
“From the very beginning it was always a goal for us to offer standardized colors,” commented Felix Ewald, CEO and co-founder of DyeMansion. “The whole RAL palette was quite a challenge to develop, this is why we are more than happy to finally offer it to all our customers and to set a new standard for high-volume applications.”
The new colours, presented this week, are already available as cartridges for its DM60 system as well as to clients via the DyeMansion On-Demand Service. The company says that the new, broader colour offering will open up possibilities for product manufacturing and prototyping using SLS technology.
“The possibilities afforded by such a wide colour range are fantastic and the colouring constraints in the process that previously existed have now disappeared,” said Justin Pringle, Managing Director of Prototype Projects. “Our customers will love the ability to select any colour for their 3D parts, including bespoke colours to match their existing branding. With no colour restrictions, this Print-to-Product workflow, using the DyeMansion system, takes the SLS process to another level.”
In developing the new colour finishes, DyeMansion had to test the various elements and properties of a material which could impact the colouring result. To guarantee good colour quality, the company has worked primarily with PA2200 and its PolyShot Surfacing (PSS) finish. According to the company, different materials and finishes can have an affect on the final colour of a part.
The PSS process employed by DyeMansion before the colouring process, is a proprietary blasting process that results in parts with a high quality, matte-gloss surface that is both dirt and water repellent. The PSS technique can be used on SLS or MJF parts and prepares parts for colouring in just a manner of minutes.
As mentioned towards the beginning of the article, DyeMansion has also announced that its new RAL colour palette for 3D printed parts will soon be available for parts printed on HP’s MJF 300/500 series machines. If you’ve worked with HP’s 3D printers, you’ll know that while they are fast and cost effective, the parts they produce are limited in terms of material and colour. Up until recently, parts could only be 3D printed in a grey colour. With the release of its 300/500 series, however, it introduced the possibility to 3D print white parts.
This ability, in turn, has dramatically opened up the possibilities for dying MJF parts, which DyeMansion is taking full advantage of.
