Creaform’s 3D scanning could offer competitive edge for 2021 America’s Cup

The 3D scanning company is an official supplier of the New York Yacht Club American Magic sailing team

Creaform, a Canadian 3D scanning and measurement company, has been named an official supplier of the New York Yacht Club American Magic team, which will be participating in the 36th America’s Cup as a potential Challenger. Creaform will help the team to create, simulate and verify components for its racing boats to improve performance.

Started in 1851, the America’s Cup is one of the world’s oldest international sporting events. In the world of sailing, winning the America’s Cup is the highest prize achievable. At the 36th America’s Cup—coming up in two years—the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will defend the cup against a challenger, which could be New York Yacht Club American Magic.

The latter is hoping that Creaform’s 3D scanning solutions and expertise will give it an edge against its competitors.

“America’s Cup campaigns are driven in part by innovation, precision and time management, and Creaform helps us in all of these areas,” said Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and Executive Director of American Magic. “Creaform’s 3D measurement technology, combined with the determined onsite work of their team, is a significant competitive edge for American Magic.”

Creaform will enable American Magic to create, simulate, verify and collaborate on innovative 3D designs and parts for its racing boats. The company’s advanced solutions will help to speed up turnaround times and production schedules—two critical factors considering the races are coming up in 2021.

Through the partnership, Creaform engineers have already been deployed to American Magic’s production facility in Rhode Island, where they are working closely with the team’s designers and builders to integrate 3D scanning and modeling technologies.

“Creaform could not think of a better partnership for its 3D measurement technologies,” said Stéphane Auclair, Vice President Division Marketing & Product Management, Creaform. “Just like American Magic, we share the same, unwavering commitment to performance excellence and being on the crest of innovation.

“We are proud that American Magic relied on our metrology solutions throughout the entire stages of their product development process of their soon-to-be-legendary monohull yacht. To be the first—with no second—at this epic race will need much determination. We wish the team good luck during the 2021 America’s Cup.”

The upcoming America’s cup will be held in Auckland, New Zealand from March 6 to 21, 2021. Before the final Cup race, challengers will compete in the Prada Cup to determine the team that will face the reigning Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
