Composite Images 3D prints giant perfume bottle for marketing campaign

Massivit 3D printed installation reproduces the original shoe-like packaging

Australian visual marketing agency was Composite Images were approached by a client to produce a 3D shoe. “We thought: ‘easy, no problem, a shoe we can do’. Then we saw that the ‘shoe’ that we were to be printing a 3D model of… And all of a sudden it wasn’t quite so easy,” the company writes on its blog about the giant 3D printed visual marketing project.

Fortunately Composite Images is among the first adopters of Massivit‘s giant size Massivit 1800 3D printer, developed specifically for visual marketing opportunities. The system uses a special low-cost resin which is extruded through a print head and immediately polymerized by applying UV light. This makes it extremely fast, efficient and affordable. In other words, it is ideal to create unique, giant size display models.

The shoe was actually a perfume bottle, none other than the Carolina Herrera Good Girl perfume bottle. With a teetering heel that would make any woman wince in pain just thinking about wearing it and a beautiful black and gold color. “The perfume bottle itself is a piece of art, just gorgeous and we were so excited to get onto the challenge of printing a 3D model of it,” the company writes.

Composite Images internal 3D printing guru had no struggles and worked out the best segments to splice the model into to provide optimum results. The most difficult part was accommodating for the exponential raise on the heel since quite a number of layers of the printing would be conducted almost in mid-air to create that incline. Massivit technology enables the addition of internal supports directly onto the structure, not from the bottom. So adding in a few internal supports and measures to stabilize the shoe made it possible to complete it.

The shoe was printed in 3 segments, glued and sealed together to create a seamless finish. After the model had been put together it was time to work on the finishing including sanding, filling and painting. Within 2 weeks the team went from looking at a 2D picture to completing a giant size 3D model, standing an impressive 2 meters high. The model is being used to promote the amazing Good Girl fragrance by Carolina Herrera.
