You may remember the 3D printed Lamborghini story that 3dpbm and 3D Printing Media Network exclusively broke – the very first media to do so – a few weeks back. After the story went viral and made it into some of the largest generalist media in the US and worldwide, Lamborghini itself eventually got wind of it. As part of the Lamborghini Real Lover campaign, the company turned this into one of the coolest Christmas tales ever, by swapping the 3D printed ongoing project for a brand new Aventador.
Sterling Backus, the author of the 3D printed Lamborghini project, told us his primary goal was to show his son the benefits of learning about STEAM subjects. Well, Lamborghini’s gesture sure goes a long way towards showing these benefits. Including the opportunity for Sterling’s son to drive around for the next two weeks with his dad in a brand new Lamborghini, something not everyone gets to do.
Lamborghini has been getting fairly serious about 3D printing, with more and more end-use parts leveraging Carbon technology for its Urus and Sian models. This latest initiative may be primarily a marketing operation but it certainly is a very well thought out and beautiful one. While not everyone can do what Backus has done, we can certainly say that none of this would ever have been possible without 3D printing.
Every year, around this time of the year, Lamborghini runs the Lamborghini Real Lover campaign to reward its greatest young fans. In 2018 the company had an Aventador SVJ delivered to a kid who refused to choose any other toy car model after all Lamborghini’s were sold out. He was driven around by Lamborghini’s official pilot Marco Mapelli.
