Metal Additive Manufacturing

Metal additive manufacturing is the fastest growing area of industrial 3D printing and is continuing on its disruptive journey, overcoming major challenges and seeing faster movement into true serial production applications.

This trend is spurring more healthy growth in the segment, despite temporary slowdowns experienced at the end of 2016. Now the metal additive manufacturing market appears to be entering its next major phase of growth, with the established area of metal powder bed fusion technologies undergoing major changes to address costs and volumes limitations, and an emerging market coalescing around new bound metal printing technologies.

Relevant Initiatives in this metal additive manufacturing include end-to-end process optimization for both powder bed (SLM, EBM) and powder fed processes (DED, LMD) by all major manufacturers including GE (Concept Laser and Arcam), EOS, 3D Systems, SLM Solutions, Trumpf, DMG Mori and more. Another interesting area of growth is the development of production-ready metal binder jetting technologies and bound metal technologies from major new entry players such as Desktop Metal, HP and GE – along with polymer market leader Stratasys’ own initiatives.
