Carbon gets into the 3D printed eyewear game with Neuron4D sunglasses by JINS

New models by Japanese eyewear brand launched this week

One of the most production-capable photopolymerization technologies, digital light synthesis (DSL) from Carbon, had not yet gotten involved in the eyewear business. Until now, that is, as J of JINS, a luxury eyewear brand from Japan, just launched its Neuron4D brand, with two models integrating a lattice cushion made using Carbon technology.

Along with footwear – and to certain extent bicycles – eyewear has emerged as the consumer product category that is closer to implementing additive manufacturing technologies for direct, end-use production. This past year alone, 3dpbm has dedicated several articles, a webinar and an AM Focus to this topic. This potential $3.4 billion yearly market, according to SmarTech’s latest report, until now has leveraged mostly powder bed fusion processes – mainly SLS but also multijet fusion by HP. Some stereolithography applications have also been spotted, with as many as 22 firms offering some type of 3D printed eyewear today, according to 3dpbm’s Index.

Although Carbon’s materials are possibly the most durable for any photopolymerization process, none of these firms had yet considered using the company’s fast DLS technology. J of JINS is the first firm to do so, by integrating Carbon 3D printed features into frames made with traditional materials.

Neuron4D

The Neuron4D line from J of JINS includes two models, each with three different color lenses: the Wellington and the Boston. Both models feature the Carbon 3D printed lattice cushion, which is used to provide a uniquely “comfortable fit” that combines flexibility and breathability, adjusting to the shape of one’s head without exerting too much pressure.

The lattice structure is designed with a degree of hardness determined by details measuring 100 micron that can only be reproduced using a 3D printer and allows the structure to become softer as it nears the temple. Such custom fit makes the Neuron4D eyewear ideal for active lifestyles, making it harder to slip off.

Officially presented on October 25th, the two Neuron4D models are scheduled to become officially available on October 31st, starting at ¥25,000 (about $230 US) and will be sold through the online J of JINS portal or through the brand’s official store located in the trendy area of Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.
