AMT launches PostPro3D machine for smoothing polymer parts at industrial scale

The post-processing technology has been in development for some time and is now commercially available

Additive Manufacturing Technologies Ltd. (AMT) has officially launched its patented PostPro3D machine. The award winning technology, which automatically smooths and finishes 3D printed elastomeric or nylon parts, has been in development for time and offers a “fast and cost effective” post-processing solution for industrial production.

The PostPro3D machine itself is based on AMT’s Boundary Layer Automated Smoothing Technology (BLAST) and is built specifically for smoothing parts created through powder-based and filament-based polymer 3D printing. According to AMT, the PostPro3D system is compatible with all processes under those two technologies.

The news of the launch is exciting for the industry at large, especially since AMT has been working over roughly 18 months with a number of strategic partners to test and refine its PostPro3D technology. During this period, the post-processing machine was integrated for a range of applications—including in footwear, medical, aerospace and automotive—and was tested with parts produced on “all the major 3D printers.”

This rigorous testing phase enabled AMT to ensure that its PostPro3D technology would allow manufacturers to achieve the requirements and properties necessary for end use applications. Presently, AMT is working with its development partners to incorporate PostPro3D into their digital workflows for high volume manufacturing.

“After 18 months of development and testing we are delighted to announce the launch of PostPro3D,” commented Joseph Crabtree, CEO. “Our machine makes part surface finishing cost and speed competitive for high volume production—we welcome an opportunity to show customers the cost savings of adopting our technology.”

Notably, AMT’s PostPro3D technology can be adapted for different 3D printing materials. With HP, for instance, the company has developed a specific process for Nylon parts printed on HP’s MJF platform. In this case, AMT says the total process time is between 90 and 120 minutes and the largest parts that can be post-processed are 600 x 400 x 400 mm.

The now commercially available machine, which has both UL and CE certifications (and has the potential to be approved for medical use), is priced starting at €75,000. Shipments of the PostPro3D are expected to happen in Q4 2018. AMT will also be presenting its post-processing machine at the upcoming Formnext expo in November and will be speaking at the 3D Printing Post-Processing Conference and AM Integrated Factory Conference in December.

In combination with the PostPro3D launch, AMT has also announced that it will be providing its new post-processing platform as a service from its Sheffield facility. This service will give clients access to AMT’s 24-hour depowdering and smoothing process. “In addition to unveiling PostPro3D we are announcing the opening of a part processing service in our Sheffield facilities,” Crabtree added. “This will offer potential customers to try the technology before they buy, or if they have a lower volume of parts to process.”

Pricing for the PostPro3D service will be based on part volume.
