AMT reveals Formnext booth made up of over 6,000 3D printed parts

The scaffold-like structure measures 4 meters in height and 84 meters square

While most companies in the AM industry will use their booths at Formnext to exhibit and showcase their technologies or products, one company is hoping to do so with its booth. Post-processing specialist Additive Manufacturing Technologies Ltd. (AMT) will present a totally unique stand at the upcoming Formnext event in Frankfurt made of over 6,000 3D printed (and post-processed) parts.

The company’s booth, which will span 84 square meters and 4 meters in height, is described by AMT as a modular, fully customizable and, importantly, reusable construction. The one-of-a-kind exhibition stand was designed and produced in collaboration with Steel Roots Design, a Sheffield-based shopfitter that specializes in the design and construction of commercial furniture and interiors.

The 3D printed booth, to be found in Hall 12.1, booth E61, is made up of 6,061 3D printed components, each of which have undergone post-processing. The 3D printed structural components will connect 1,100 meters of lightweight aluminum tubing, to create an almost scaffold-like effect inside AMT’s exhibition space.

Show, don’t tell

“The whole point of exhibiting at a show like Formnext is to demonstrate your technologies and capabilities,” commented Joseph Crabtree, CEO of AMT. “At AMT we don’t have to just tell people how good our technologies are, we want to really show them. Our unique stand will show how functional and sustainable 3D printed parts—even at higher volumes—can be utilized when using our automated post-processing technologies.”

Each of the 6,061 pieces that will keep the stand together were 3D printed by Materialise on a selective laser sintering (SLS) system by EOS. All of the pieces were printed using a Nylon PA 2200 material and were post-processed using AMT’s PostPro3D system. According to AMT, the PostPro3D was used to create a non-porous surface for the pieces, which prevents water and dirt ingress.

More than just showcasing its post-processing system, AMT is also hoping to emphasize how AM can be used to create parts with new features and functionalities. That is, each of the connecting components integrates complex internal threads and moving features which make them modular and, importantly, light weight. Even with the aluminum tubing, the whole construction of the booth weighs only about 120 kg, which will enable AMT to transport it easily to Germany and back.

Focus on sustainability

“With around 6,000 3D printed components and over 1 km of pole material, the structure is a unique feat of engineering and a great challenge for the Steel Roots Design team,” added Tom Warren, Director at Steel Roots Design. “We are delighted with the results and proud that the modular, completely reusable frame material will mean something versatile, lasting and reusable, which moves away from the wasteful tradition of exhibition stand builds.”

Crabtree reemphasized the importance of sustainability in the design and manufacturing process. “This level of sustainability commitment is a fundamental principle for AMT at every level of the business,” he said. “Every decision we make takes sustainability into consideration.”
