Amorepacific brings tailored 3D printed sheet masks to CES 2020

Korean beauty giant Amorepacific will be introducing its customizable 3D printed face mask system at CES 2020 this week. In fact, CES 2020 has named the 3D printed cosmetic product, “IOPE Tailored 3D Mask”, as an Honoree of its 2020 Innovation Awards. The customized 3D printed face mask will become available to consumers at Amorepacific’s flagship store in Seoul in April 2020.

Last year, one of the most notable new products in the cosmetics category at CES 2019 was Johnson & Johnson’s Neutrogena MaskiD hydrogel face mask, a 3D printed sheet mask personalized to the consumer’s skin profile. Now, Korean beauty giant Amorepacific is entering the custom 3D skincare product market with its own long awaited offering.

Amorepacific’s Tailored 3D Mask was developed in partnership with Korean 3D printing company Lincsolution in 2017. The skincare product is driven by a smartphone app, which measures the user’s facial dimensions, generates a skin diagnosis and sends the information to a special 3D printer, which then prints a hydrogel face mask that is tailored to the user’s face shape and skin conditions.

The multi-material 3D printer was developed specifically for printing the hydrogel face masks and is reportedly capable of printing a custom face mask within mere minutes (just five minutes for a single mask). The rate of printing the skincare product has made the 3D printing technology viable for in-store use for clients. As mentioned, the 3D printed face mask system will become available in April 2020 under Amorepacific’s lab-based skincare brand IOPE.

The sheet mask trend, long popular in Korea, is now somewhat ubiquitous, so it is no surprise that cosmetic companies are looking to take the products to the next level. The ability to customize such a product using an in-store 3D printing technology is arguably one of the more interesting ways that the sheet mask area is evolving.  From the 3D printing perspective, the second big 3D printed skincare product to hit the market shows the growing commercial viability of bioprinting technologies in the consumer sector.
