Aluminum Association assigns new A20X designations for metal powder

The Aluminum Association, internationally recognized as the body that assigns all new aluminum alloy designations has accepted the registration of the A20X powder with new metal powder designations.

The high strength aluminum alloy A20X, produced by Aluminium Materials Technologies (now part of Eckart GmbH, an Altana Group company) will now go by the following official designations:

  • 2A05.50 – 20-63 micron A20X powder
  • 2B05.50 – 20-63 micron A20X F1 powder

A20X designations

The creation of these new metal powder product designations allows the industry to clearly identify the A20X product in use. This offers reassurance to those wishing to work with A20X knowing it is an internationally recognized alloy with fixed and standardized alloy composition.

The A20X powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has been developed for high strength production components to be used in the most demanding applications. The alloy presents high temperature resistance properties, stress corrosion resistance and significantly better fatigue properties when compared to Al-Si based additive manufacturing alloys.

Originally developed as a casting alloy, A20X is available for use in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. Suitable for use with all leading brands of AM equipment, it has been used to produce parts with up to 511MPa UTS and over 13% elongation.
