3D Systems certified for Scalmalloy AM parts manufacturing

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.

Metal 3D printer manufacturer and service provider 3D Systems was recently qualified to be a certified member of the Scalmalloy distribution and manufacturing program, as a partner with APWORKS GmbH.

Scalmalloy,a high-strength, low-density aluminum alloy developed specifically for additive manufacturing, is an ideal material to use in highly loaded and safety-critical parts. The wide range of use for this material in industrial applications includes aerospace structural components creating bionic brackets, semiconductor manifold applications, and energy and fluid management in transportation applications.

Koen Huybrechts, Application Development Manager of the 3D Systems Application Innovation Group (AIG) remarked that “3D Systems’ unique vacuum chamber concept proved its impact on process stability once again; for a combination of differently oriented samples, UTS results show a high and extremely stable 528 +-9 MPa value (2sigma).”

Scalmalloy can be processed with the DMP Flex 350 through 3D Systems’ our advanced manufacturing service facilities. Developed specifically for AM by APWORKS, Scalmalloy is the highest strength AM processable aluminium alloy, and is the only AM processable alloy which can effectively substitute high strength 7000 series aluminium alloys from plate or forging.

Thanks to its low density it provides density-specific properties which are extremely competitive even with the highest strength alternatives. Combining high strength with excellent ductility and processability, Scalmalloy is considered an ideal material for use in highly loaded and safety critical parts, which is why it is already applied in many critical applications. Scalmalloy already has a proven track record in a wide range of applications in Aerospace, Robotics, Marine and Motorsport, and is an approved material under the the FIA regulations.

With Additive Manufacturing the process time to build a part is the single biggest cost driver. Reducing the volume of the part by exploiting the higher strength of Scalmalloy therefore provides cost savings as well as weight savings, enabling you to win on both fronts.
